ARCATA -- Supporters of anti-recruitment Measures F and J met Thursday with Arcata and Eureka’s city manager and city attorneys to work on an enforcement plan for the Youth Protection Act. Police in both cities will be briefed in the near future, as well as local military recruiters.
On Nov. 4, voters in Arcata and Eureka approved the new recruiting rules by margins of 73 and 56 percent respectively. As of Dec. 4, 30 days after the election, it became against the law in both cities for military recruiters to contact anyone under the age of 18 for recruitment into the armed forces.
Minors approached by recruiters or others who witness violations of the law are asked to file a complaint with their police department. Police officers can hand out tickets for violations to both recruiters and their commanding officer. For information about the laws, visit www.stoprecruitingkids.org.
