Humboldt County’s jail had its first stabbing in more than 20 years Tuesday when Allen Christopher Guilliams, 30, of Rio Dell stabbed Andrew Brian Belant, 25, of Eureka at about 7:30 p.m.
Both men were in the jail’s dayroom when Guilliams attacked Belant with a sharpened metal rod, stabbing him six times in the upper right shoulder and arm. Belant treated for his injuries at a hospital and taken back to jail.
Guilliams, whose motive is still being investigated, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon in jail. He has been in custody since Nov. 14 after Eureka police officers busted him for evading a police officer, a felony, driving without a license and violating his parole.
Another jail inmate died at about 11 p.m. Tuesday after being on life support since he was found hanging inside a cell at about 12:15 a.m.
Deputies immediately cut down the man and began CPR while waiting for medical personnel, who took him to a hospital.
Richard Craig Kesser, 47, had been alone in the cell and had been in custody since Dec. 5, 2006 for ongoing court proceedings. A forensic pathologist will do an autopsy later this week.
