EUREKA -- With the first snow of winter blanketing the mountains on the North Coast, local residents are reminded to be respectful of private property rights, and instead play in the fluffy white stuff which falls on public lands.

“Those people choosing to visit the snow are encouraged to ensure they are not trespassing,” said Brenda Godsey, public information officer for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

The HCSO reminds the public that all areas off the roads between Kneeland and Bridgeville are privately owned, as is the property on Bear River Ridge on Monument Road between Rio Dell and Ferndale. The public is invited, however, to Forest Service areas such as Titlow Hill.

Officials remind residents to check current road conditions before departing for a snow trip, and to be sure to have chains or snow tires. The public is also asked to drive carefully and carry appropriate gear such as a charged cellular telephone and clothing suitable for winter conditions.
